When we discovered this paradise in 1962, our mission was to protect and develop this place as a privileged place. We have been fulfilling this obligation for more than 60 years and, as sponsors, we guarantee sustainable development.

During its development phase, we gave special importance to a respectful treatment of the natural environment that makes this place so different.

Sponsoring the Tuna Route and supporting its sustainable fishing is just one of our initiatives to fulfil our responsibility as an important part of the local community because we know that only in this way can we preserve the culture and quality of life of the region.

Our history

1959

In 1959, three German friends: Klaus Jamin, Peter Klein and Ricci Kiggenbach travelled from their country to Malaga to discover Andalusia. There they decided to buy three horses to go on a route around the towns of Tarifa, Bolonia and Zahara de los Atunes. They were captivated by the beauty of this place and saw it as a great opportunity to invest in the tourist sector. They stopped at “Casa Juanito” for lunch, and there, trying to find out more about the area, they managed to get in touch with the owners of some land through the owner of the bar.

Once they returned to their country, they sought financing from developers to become partners in a business venture: the construction of a luxury housing development in Zahara de los Atunes, which would be occupied in the first phase mainly by German citizens.

1962

In 1962, the company ATLANTERRA S.A. was created and began to prepare the land and asphalt the roads. Subsequently, in 1966, the first town plan was drawn up, which was amended a few years later in 1971.

In the mid-seventies, Kurt Schlichtkrull, the majority shareholder of the company, was appointed chairman and during these years he succeeded in raising the urbanisation to levels of prosperity and wealth never seen before.

1974

In 1974, once the Tourism Promotion Plan for Cabo de Plata had been approved, the urbanisation obtained the denomination of Centre of National Tourist Interest. From then until well into the 90s, numerous projects began to be built by two architects: the German Horst Mankel and Joaquin Cuello from Algeciras, creating the so-called “Atlanterra style” inspired by the farmhouses of this area and characterised by the use of natural stone, towers, windows and doors of wooden staves and gabled roofs of Arabic tiles.

Today the urbanisation is a place of choice for people from all over the world to live and enjoy their holidays, having become synonymous with nature, luxury and exclusivity.
